As a Physical Scientist you will perform the following duties:
Responsible for conceiving, planning, and conducting research and development projects of considerable complexity concerning methods and techniques used to chemically analyze travel and identification documents. Performs the most complex and difficult chemical analyses of questioned documents by utilizing a full range of instrumental analysis and forensic techniques in support of the ICE mission to protect national security, public safety and the integrity of our borders. Serves as a nationally recognized subject matter expert, providing court testimony and authoritative advice in the field of forensic chemistry, most specifically as it pertains to travel and identification documents. Findings rendered may be used as evidence in the prosecution of alleged violations of criminal laws. Designs, directs, conducts and presents professional papers and lectures during training conferences and classes. To be minimally eligible for the Physical Scientist position you must possess of the following:
Basic Requirements Degree:
physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and
Experience:
Education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Minimum
Qualifications:
For GS-14:
One (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:
Serving as a nationally recognized expert and consultant in the chemical analysis; Leading a group or project in the laboratory or forensic community; Preparing reports of examination results and conclusions with illustrative exhibits for court, and; Evaluating equipment for usefulness, compatibility with current systems, reliability, and cost effectiveness. Qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Qualification claims will be subject to verification. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience):
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Current or Former Political Appointees:
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
